Electrolytes with flame retardant pentafluoro(phenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene for nickel-rich layered oxide/graphite cells

Ni-rich NMC cathode materials with a Ni content of over 80% are currently regarded as promising pathway to further boost the energy density rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Meanwhile, cell safety is an important aspect when commercializing high-capacity Here, compatibility flame retardant pentafluoro(phenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene (FPPN) added ethylene carbonate/ethyl methyl carbonate/lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6 in EC:EMC) electrolyte studied for NMC/graphite full cells. Addition 15 wt.% FPPN baseline renders it non-flammable defined by self-extinguishing time zero. When compared electrolyte, both coin and pouch cells containing show electrochemical performance. In addition, fluorinated carbonates combined reduce amount additive. Excellent retardancy found combining 35 vol.% 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl carbonate just 5 FPPN. The results this study confirm that potent electrolytes indicate good materials.
